Defense and Rhenus Contract Logistics, in collaboration with Volantess, are establishing the new logistics center for the army in Soesterberg (LCS). The distribution center will cover an area of 37,800 m² and is intended for the flexible storage and handling of defense materials. Volantess is overseeing the development of the building and the site. Construction is set to begin in the first quarter of 2024, and the DC is expected to be operational in the second quarter of 2025.
Best Practices & Innovation
Through the collaboration with Rhenus and Volantess, Defense is making optimal use of best practices and innovation in logistics for the design, construction, maintenance, and operation of the new DC. Our strengths have been combined to design a logistics layout with a building integrated into it. Based on the specification, Rhenus has devised the logistics process and worked on the logistics design in partnership with Districon. Together with the architect from Denc, we have created a suitable and adaptive design, allowing the logistics process to expand within the existing building volume.
Flexible Growth
The building is positioned in such a way that trucks from opposite directions can dock correctly. LCS is highly flexible in terms of storage capacity and operations, allowing for adjustments to be made in response to rapid political changes worldwide and the related ambitions of the armed forces. Furthermore, thanks to the use of a flexible mezzanine floor above the docks, the office space can continue to expand.
BREEAM Excellent
LCS is also being developed with a strong focus on sustainability, aiming for a BREEAM Excellent certification. In addition to installing triple glazing, extra insulated overhead doors, and thick insulation on the walls, the roof will be reinforced to support the installation of solar panels. To minimize energy consumption, heat pumps will be used to provide heating for the warehouse and office, and interconnected LED lighting will be installed in the warehouse, along with motion sensors in the office.
Maintenance & Management
Even after its completion in early 2025, we will remain closely involved. Together with Rhenus, we will ensure the maintenance and management of LCS. Volantess is responsible for all infrastructure-related matters (building and site), with support from Quadrant 4.
